Global warming - what is it?

Global warming describes the gradual increase in the earth's temperature. This temperature rise is believed to be human-induced:

The layer of CO2 emissions in our atmosphere reflects the sun's rays back down to the earth. This is a natural temperature-regulating mechanism which makes the earth inhabitable. The CO2 layer is made up of different greenhouse gases, e.g. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4).

Over billions of years, the earth has stored enormous volumes of carbon in stores underground. Humans have extracted, burned, and thus emitted these vast quantities of carbon (in the form of CO2) into the atmosphere within only a very short period of time. This has led to an increased concentration of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere which resulted in greater solar radiation to be trapped by the CO2 layer. More sun rays are now reflected back to the earth. This has notably increased the earth’s temperature. We refer to this phenomenon as global warming.

Global warming caused by increased CO2 concentration has an alarming impact on the earth's fragile environment. Droughts throughout the world are causing crop failures. Wildfires now burn with far greater rage. Melting ice caps and glaciers are causing floods. Sea levels are rising. Warm unseasonable winters are threatening fragile eco-systems and throwing the migratory patterns of species out of balance.

As humans we have become so reliant on fossil fuels that nearly everything we do generates CO2 emissions; from our modern farming practices to transport, to the electricity used to turn on a light, boil water in a kettle or cook our meals.

Global warming is no longer a theory; it is an obvious fact we are confronted with every day, and the only way we can prevent it is to take action now.

About The Carbon Reduction Institute

At the Carbon Reduction Institute, we assess the global warming impact caused by an organisation's CO2 output, and research ways to reduce and offset this impact. We believe that global warming is the most pressing issue for human survival as we know it. Therefore our main aim is to reduce the CO2 impact humans are having on global warming and to create new and inventive ways for organisations to benefit from reducing their CO2 emissions.

Act now against global warming

Contrary to common belief, we can stop global warming and it is still relatively cheap and easy to do. Studies such as the Stern Review have shown that immediate action against global warming will cost businesses only between 0.5 to 1% of revenue. This cost will certainly increase and the damage might be irreversible if we delay action further.

We encourage and support business action against global warming. The Carbon Reduction Institute offers a unique NoCO2 business certification program which allows a business to reduce its CO2 emissions and become carbon neutral. Please visit our certification pages for further information.

Individuals and businesses can take immediate action against global warming with the Carbon Reduction Institute. We recommend three steps to reduce your CO2 impact on global warming to effectively zero:
Offsetting CO2 emissions is a process whereby an organisation or individual purchases carbon credits to neutralise its impact on global warming. Each carbon credit represents the abatement or sequestration of one tonne of CO2 from our atmosphere.

You can take action against global warming today and offset your personal CO2 emissions with the Carbon Reduction Institute:
